The Imbabura Volcano

The Imbabura Volcano is situated Northeast of Otavalo and the gorgeous lake of San Pablo.

Two routes approaching from difference sides of the mountain are usually followed. The normal route is not difficult. No formal mountain climbing experience is necessary, although the climber has to be in good shape to reach the top.

If you want a very exciting adventure, there is an alternative route from the San Pablo Lake. It is necessary to have rock climbing experience and you will need  a helmet, rope and climbing harness, which we arrange for you.

Both routes start at 5 o'clock in the morning, so we can make the best use of the day. The summit lies at 4,630m. (15,200 feet) and has a view into a great open crater.

We have the experience to guide you. With the help of a professional climber it is possible to travel around the entire crater which presents an impressive view  of the whole surrounding: San Pablo Lake, Otavalo, Ibarra, The Yahuarcocha Lake, Mt. Cayambe, the extensive valleys of Angochahua, Zuleta and La Esperanza.
